New Year, Same Plastic Polluter Coca Cola, Pepsi, and Nestle were named the top plastic polluters for the third year in a row according to Break Free From Plastic's report. Break Free From Plastic has conducted an annual brand audit across the globe where citizens collect, count, and document the brands on plastic waste found in their communities and environment. So far they have colelcted 346,494 pieces of plastic from 55 countries. The results from this year show that the top single use plastic polluters have been falsly claiming to reduce their plastic production through greenwashing. These brands need to make real steps to waste reduction by reducing, reinventing, and using a reuse system. AUSTIN RECYCLES UPDATESCompost for Everyone! This February, the remaining 55,000 Austin households will receive curbside composting! The program began in 2013 and expanded again in 2017, diverting "about 91,000 tons of compostable waste from the landfill"! Curbside compost has made composting for Austinites much easier, as well as allowing more types of compostable items to be composted cannot be put in a backyard compost.
ZERO WASTE SWAPS: New Year New ThinkingThe new year is a great time to think about what single use items you used the most last year. Did you notice an item you were throwing out or recycling a lot? Is there an alternative with less waste? You don't have to make a list of everything to change at once, just look at the items you as you go about your day. I also try to think if there is another alternative to throwing an item out. I ask myself: Is it reusable? Is it recyclable? is it compostable? Can I donate it? Would someone in my buy nothing group want it? From this I now use a lot of "tupperwear" that were old jars. I encourage you to ask yourself these questions and see how many items can have another life instead of the trash bin! VIRTUAL EVENTS
